Ulysses Comes Home 13/14/15 June

04 June 2014

Preparing for Bloomsday 2014, Joyceborough invites you to join actors Sam Ford and Ronan Carey, together with members of the Phizzfest Mummers for three evenings of reading by twilight, as Ulysses comes home, in Woodstock – at the heart of Joyceborough

The first Bloomsday celebration in Dublin took place just 60 years ago, in 1954 and involved no more than a dozen people. However, since 1982, the centenary of James Joyce’s birth, Bloomsday has been commemorated annually on the streets of Dublin with lively and colourful events.

Around the world, Bloomsday celebrates Ulysses as ‘a book of going forth by day’ but Ulysses or ‘the blue book Eccles’ as Joyce himself called it, is also a book of twilight, a book of returning, a book in which disparates ultimately form and consummate unions. Much of this coalescing takes places on Dublin City’s northside, the place where Joyce, in the words of his biographer, Richard Ellmann, ‘prepared for greatness’

In these readings “Ulysses comes home”, we meet DB Murphy, old sea salt, recently returned to Dublin and seven years under sail, on the three-masted schooner the Rosevean, from Bridgewater with bricks. We meet and hear the wisdom of Lipoti Virag, Bloom’s grandfather, of Szombathely, Hungary. Finally we earwig, as Bloom and Stephen take tea together in the midnight hour before stepping out to experience the sidereal early-morning starlight.

Friday June 13th: Circe / Nighttown
Saturday June 14th: Eumaeus / The Cabman’s Shelter

The Sessions at Woodstock

11 October 2012

Inspired by Phizzfest & true to our name…
THE WOODSTOCK SESSIONS

To celebrate the launch of Woodstock’s new supper menu, and because Katie Kim at Woodstock during Phizzfest was such a huge success, we are delighted to bring you a series of live acoustic music nights from some of Ireland’s most talented and up and coming performers:

Q 25 October
In a previous life Q was known to friends and acquaintances as Colm
Quearney, the guitarist and songwriter with not one but TWO of
Ireland’s more daring bands, Dragonfly and Lir. His debut The World’s Not Round and the follow-ups Body Electric and Root to the Fruit put Colm on the map as a solo star.

Ciara Sidine 8 November
Sidine’s music has been described as, ‘Exquisitely beautiful . . . recommended from the highest heights.’ («««« Hot Press) and her album is, ‘A finely rounded, richly produced album of Americana . . . vocals and lyrics so distilled they reveal fresh angles with each repeated exposure’ («««« Irish Times).

Palo Alto 15 November
With Mark Brennan, Brian McGowan and David Murphy. Palo Alto brings us stripped back tunes by, or inspired by the great and the good of rock n roll! This promises to be a very fun night and we anticipate this one will book out quickly, you’ve been warned, get booking!

Nollaig O’Connor 22 November
Nollaig ‘The Voice’ O’Connor was a contestant on this year’s Voice of Ireland. Of her singing, Sharon Corr said, ‘that was inspirational’, and Brian Kennedy added, ‘there are other women who came out here and sang the roof off, and alienated me from the performance… you came out here with a small voice, and the most amazing, natural thing happened, which is that I wanted to come closer to you.’

The Sessions are ticketed and booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment. Performances start at 9pm. Join us any time before 8.15pm for supper! For bookings call in, email angela@woodstockcafe.ie, or contact us through Facebook or on Twitter @WoodstockDub.
Note: minimum eats/drinks spend €10
